The soaring Monas National Monument is located in Jakarta. Commissioned by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno. The monument was constructed from 1960 to 1975. The column rises above Medan Merdeka in the center of Jakarta. It honors Indonesia’s struggle for independence from The Netherlands.
